You’ve probably heard that BCR will shut down operations this year. Luckily, we were able to negotiate free Lyrasis membership until June 2011 for our members, so there’s plenty of time to see how much money you’ll continue to save by joining them in July 2011.
Lyrasis offers more training and consulting options than BCR and can usually provide better database discounts. They’ve even been able to obtain contracts with database vendors that BCR was unable to get.
I’ve always been a proponent of collaboration and cooperation. I’ve mentioned in the past that when libraries work together (e.g. statewide virtual reference services) it allows them to streamline operations and reduce duplication of efforts and provide services they couldn’t do on their own. You’ve probably been doing a lot of this at your own library recently. So while it’s sad that BCR is closing after 75 years of serving libraries, this change makes library service providers more efficient than ever (Lyrasis is actually a merger of three other library services providers; PALINET, SOLINET and NELINET) which means more cost savings passed on to your organization.
