How cool! Woman’s Day is running a contest for women (who are US residents) older than 17 to submit their stories by May 9, 2010 on why their library is important to their community. The four winning entries will be featured in their March 2011 issue. What a great way to remind people of everything libraries do for them. And wouldn’t it be marvelous if an entry about your library won?
Why not put up some posters around the library urging patrons to submit entries? You could even offer to help them send them in, then ask if you could feature their entry on your website or get it published in a local paper if it isn’t one of the selected ones (entries can’t have been previously published and you don’t want to hurt their chance of winning). If nothing else, it’ll get your users thinking about the wonderful benefits of having a library. And maybe some men, children, teens or women younger than 18 will be inspired to write their own love letter to you, which you could publicize immediately.
